Ultra Cool Ghost Ship

Filed under: Sea Views & News — DJC @ 1:12 am

In the ‘bizarre but thematically timely’ nautical decor category, this surreal set from an editorial in Vogue magazine has an extravagantly haunting impact. According to the editorial, (about ice, of all things), the lowly ice cube has been elevated to new heights by bartending cognoscenti. Designer ice. Who knew. Love the set design, and fully intend to ask the bartender about my ice’s pedigree, next happy hour.

Enjoying The Sailing Vibe In Annapolis

Filed under: Sea Views & News — DJC @ 2:57 pm

50,000 people turned out this past weekend for the Annapolis Boat Show, and I was lucky enough to be walking the docks right there with them! To make it even better, we had sunny, warm weather the entire weekend. My neighbor Chuck swears it was the best weather the show’s seen in its 41-year history!

My first time visiting this show, I was impressed with the size of the show, and with the unique “sailing vibe” there. The Fort Lauderdale and Miami shows are larger, but they’re predominantly powerboat shows, and their “vibe” is very different. Here in Annapolis, it was all about sailing.

My own show favorites were the hot little Audi Melges 20 and the beautiful Oyster 72 with a great cockpit setup.  Aside from the boats and accessories, the show also offered basic sailing instruction in an onshore classroom setting – people were constantly lined up waiting to get in! It was also great fun running into so many people I’d worked or sailed with before, including our 2000 America’s Cup skipper, John Kolius with KO-Sailing in Texas.

Sales during the show were up, which is certainly a welcome sign to an industry hit particularly hard by the economic recession. With dealers nationwide cutting back and carrying smaller inventories, I suspect turnout may be higher at all of the upcoming boat shows – and that’s good for everyone!

The historical buildings, fabulous restaurants and interesting nightlife in Annapolis added to the fun of the entire weekend but, alas, I left without having a single crab cake, so it looks like I’ll have to make a return visit to the show next year.

I Can’t Believe It’s Not…

Filed under: Sea Views & News — DJC @ 8:04 am

The first time I spotted the dinnerware gleaming brightly on the display shelf, my eyes got wide… and then I sighed in disappointment.  “You see,” I said to the sales rep standing next to me, “THIS is the kind of fashionable dinnerware I’d love to have on boats, but it’s just not practical.”

The rep smiled silently, then reached up and carefully removed one of the dinner plates from its stand. She held her arm out a few feet above the floor and simply let the plate drop…  I jumped out of the way, mouth open, staring in disbelief as it bounced unbroken, ‘clackety-clack,’ off the showroom floor.

I couldn’t believe it! I am in Heaven! Finally, non-breakable dinnerware that looks so much like fine stoneware, you simply cannot tell the difference until you hold it in your hand! To anyone looking for dinnerware that will stand up to the demands of poolside or onboard use, and is as fashionable as the rest of your seaside home or yacht interior – I need say nothing more about our new line of non-breakable dinnerware than this: you can’t believe it’s not… but it IS!
